Residents were advised to take cover in basements or interior rooms on the lowest floor of sturdy buildings.
The National Weather Service warned of potential additional brief tornadoes in certain areas throughout the morning.
The entire Chicago area was expected to see heavy downpours and storms throughout the morning.
Some areas could experience localized flooding and damaging winds up to 60 miles per hour.
Both the strong storms and heavy rain were expected to move out by noon Monday.
